William & Mary Partners To Host SWaM Event

On January 27, 2009 the College of William and Mary once again partnered with the Virginia Department of Business Assistance, City of Williamsburg, James City County and York County’s Office of Economic Development to present the second annual Historic Triangle Business Opportunities Workshop.
In addition to all-day networking opportunities and a SWAM registration “café”, various classes were held for participants that included “How to Sell to the Commonwealth”, “How to Evaluate Upcoming Opportunities and Statewide Contracts”, “How to Register in eVA” and the importance of certifying with the Virginia Department of Minority Business Enterprises as a small, woman-owned or minority owned (SWAM) firm. Throughout the event, representatives from the Virginia Department of Minority Business Enterprises were available providing computers and assistance to vendors in certifying with them. In addition to the 172 registered participants and numerous “drop-ins”, informational booths and networking opportunities were provided by representatives of the College of William and Mary, Virginia Department of Tourism, City of Norfolk, Gloucester County, Virginia Economic Bridge, Department of Conservation and Recreation, Eastern State Hospital, Virginia Department of Transportation, Small Business Development Center of Hampton Roads, James City County, York County, City of Williamsburg, Department of Business Assistance, and the Virginia Department of Minority Business Enterprises. The event was held in the Williamsburg Community Building and concurrent classes were held in meeting rooms of the adjacent Williamsburg Library. Admission was free. The York County Office of Economic Development provided breakfast and coffee to all.
Initial review of evaluations shows that participants found the Historic Triangle Business Opportunities Workshop to be beneficial and quite informative.
