Are You Registered for SWaMFest V?
Greetings!
We're back to school! After a great response from VASCUPP's Spring SWaM newsletter (archived here), our member schools have been hard at work coming up with even more content to help you learn more about how to do business with Virginia's colleges and universities.
In this issue of Supplier Diversity News we're featuring updated information about how to register for VASCUPP's SWaMFest V, new construction projects at Virginia Tech, highlights from JMU's SWaM Vendor Fair, VAGP's Fall Conference, and an explanation of the different agencies within UVa. Our new feature, "What the Heck Is...?" gives you the FYI about CPI.
Did you know that 5-6 million bushels of apples are produced every year by Virginia growers? Enjoy some apple cider this fall!

Three Faces, One Supplier Diversity Mission
The University of Virginia is actually three different state agencies - Agencies 207, 209, and 246. Agency 207 is the University of Virginia Academic Division; Agency 209 is the University of Virginia Health System; and Agency 246 is the University of Virginia's College at Wise in Wise, Virginia. There are three agencies with three supply chains - each unique in what they buy and how they buy it.

What the Heck is...
CPI?
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a program overseen by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that tracks monthly changes in the prices consumers pay for goods or services. Its cousin, the Producer Price Index (PPI) measures pricing in the production process. "Ok," you're thinking, "that would be great to know if I were in an economics class. But what does that have to do with small business?"

2009 JMU SWaM Vendor Fair JMU Procurement Services would like to thank everyone that attended the 2009 SWaM Vendor Fair at the University's Festival Conference Center. It's always nice to put a face with a name since many times we don't actually have the chance to meet vendors in person. The vendors that displayed had great networking opportunities throughout the day, and buyers were able to find new vendors and learn about new services.

Expanding Opportunities at Virginia Tech
You may have heard that there is lot of construction occurring on and planned for the Virginia Tech campus. What exactly does "a lot" signify? Well, just recently completed were the Basketball Practice Facility, Black Box Theater, and New Residence Hall I projects. Just underway are the Ambler Johnston dormitory renovation, ICTAS-II Research Facility, Football Locker Room, and the Commuter Lot Parking Garage projects. Projects expected to commence within the next 12 -18 months include the McComas Hall Student Athletics Facility expansion, Owens and West End Market Dining Halls expansion, Visitors and Admissions Center, Material Management Facility, Infectious Disease Research Facility, Center for the Arts, Academic and Student Affairs Building, HABB-I Research Facility, VBI-III Research Facility, Chiller Plant, Dairy Farm relocation, Engineering Signature Building, and the Myers Lawson School of Construction Phases II & III.

If you're a contractor or subcontractor, all of this activity translates into expanding opportunities. With a little initiative, you can position your firm to capitalize. If you are a General Contractor or Construction Management firm, opportunities will be posted on eVA and on the Office of University Planning, Design, and Construction Services website at http://www.facilities.vt.edu/pdc.
If you're a subcontractor, consider attending the pre-bid/pre-proposal meetings in order to network with the prime contractors. Once an award has been made, contact the prime contractor to make them aware of your services and to ascertain the specifics of their prequalification process. Be sure to ask about upcoming outreach events. Numerous construction opportunities exist at the other VASCUPP institutions as well. Don't sit idly on the sidelines - get into the game!
